First: where is it?
The same problem goes to a different office depending on whose road or property it’s on.
- A road with a route number (like MD 214 or US 1): usually the state, MDOT State Highway Administration.
- Inside one of the county’s 27 towns and cities: start with your town or city. Who handles what depends on the service.
- A private road, or one owned by an HOA or apartment complex: the owner, HOA or management. Many HOA neighborhoods have county streets, so check first.
- Most other neighborhood roads: the county.
Not sure? Search your address on the county’s PAMS road map, or read our guide Who Maintains My Road?
